At AnaVation, our AnaVators are the pillars who drive our company’s mission forward. The AnaVator Spotlight series is dedicated to sharing the stories of our employees; celebrating the experiences and passions that inspire their work. We highlight the diverse talents and perspectives that define our workforce to demonstrate that AnaVation is a place where professionals are supported, empowered to grow, and can make a meaningful impact. This month, we are proud to feature Colman, a Lead Systems Engineer who has been an integral part of our team since 2022.

In the last few years, Colman initially joined AnaVation to support a Law Enforcement contract and has since transferred his technical expertise to our Intelligence and Military Solutions Account for work at Fort Belvoir. The hallmarks of Colman’s journey are his relentless pursuit of knowledge and his willingness to step beyond the familiar. He has challenged himself to undertake new projects outside his knowledge base, leveraging opportunities to master the intricacies of cloud architecture, managing cloud-based systems, and becoming the local SME for a new system platform replacing a past environment. He is a proponent of continuous learning, utilizing AnaVation’s certification reimbursement program and resources to continue building his credentials, which reflect an investment in both his own growth and the success of the missions he supports.

When asked about his favorite part of the job, Colman’s answer is clear: it’s the people. “I have been very fortunate to work with some very talented and dedicated people who make working enjoyable. Both contractors and Government civilians have become good friends, which makes working less like a job and more like a great opportunity to accomplish important tasks to support the customers’ mission,” Colman explains. This sense of belonging is a cornerstone of what has kept him at AnaVation. Having worked at several large technology firms in the Washington D.C. area in the past, Colman values the difference he feels at AnaVation. “I am not just a number or a bottom-line multiple, and I appreciate that,” Colman says. He points to the company’s flexibility, supportive leadership, and consistent effort to create opportunities aligned with employees’ interests. He also sheds light on the inclusive culture, open communication from management, and community-building events that foster camaraderie across the company. From regular check-ins with supervisors to conversations about contract health, he feels AnaVation consistently provides the best possible services for its employees, offering a transparent and people-first environment.

Outside of work, Colman leads a life defined by adventure and a remarkable “fix-it” mentality. As a lifelong sailor, he has navigated open waters since the age of five, sailing across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, the North Sea, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. During his college years and beyond, he had raced large sailboats on the Chesapeake Bay. While he does not have a sailboat of his own, he still loves being on the water and tries to take cruises as often as he can with his friends and family. One of his most memorable experiences was serving as a crew member aboard the Tall Ship Schooner Alexandria during Op-Sail ’86, celebrating the centenary of the Statue of Liberty in New York. He later spent a summer living on board as a paid crew member until college, once it eventually sank in 1996 off the coast of Cape Hatteras, an adventure that speaks to his spirit of exploration.

On land, Colman enjoys home improvement projects. A student of cabinetmaking and carpentry for three years in high school, Colman still uses furniture he built nearly forty years ago. He possesses a special knack for fixing nearly anything, from appliances and engines to small electronics and handcrafted furniture. Colman’s hands-on skills mirror the same problem-solving he brings to engineering. During the weekends, his favorite way to spend his time is beach walks and having dinner with his friends. As the self-proclaimed “chef of the family,” he looks forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner traditions as he finds joy sharing his passion in preparing special meals for family and friends, bringing cherished people together around the table.

AnaVator Spotlights reminds us that our greatest strength lies in our people. By sharing Colman’s experiences, it reinforces what makes AnaVation unique: a culture that values continuous learning, meaningful work, voices to be heard, strong connections, and providing opportunities for growth.  We celebrate not only his contributions but also the collaborative and positive workplace environment that enables our teams to excel. It goes to show that this is a collective commitment to mission success that continues to set AnaVation apart.
